International Nonprofit Work

EMI is active throughout the world because sustaining life systems is more than a local endeavor.

EMI has for a decade provided consultation, assistance and support to people of Japan in their work to preserve and restore their country’s rivers and watersheds. Since 1997, we have traveled to Japan annually to share our experience in river restoration and species recovery with educators, officials and activists at conferences held throughout the country. We have helped activists implement grassroots organizing projects and have provided field research expertise on rivers throughout the country.

In 2003, EMI assisted in the founding of The River Policy Network of Japan. Its mission is to develop a constituency of key decision-makers and stakeholders in Japan to address issues associated with the management, protection and restoration of rivers in Japan, and to provide the public with opportunities to become involved in river issues.
