Everglades National Park Monitoring Indicators and Science Plan Development

EMI has been working with the South Florida Ecosystem Team and other entities in the development of specific ecosystem and system indicators for monitoring. Information developed from the monitoring efforts will be used to assist a large array of stakeholders in the restoration and management of the Everglades.

Carmel River Restoration

EMI, in cooperation with Phil Williams and Associates in San Francisco, has developed for the Planning Conservation League an innovative river restoration and watershed approach for the Carmel River in California. The plan, while integrating biological and geomorhpic relationships, provides a priority-based approach. Listed species in this area include the California yellow-legged frog and Steelhead Trout. This project is ongoing and continues to provide new ideas for the future of the Carmel River.

Ongoing Research

  • Adaptive Management Review – Developing a legal review of the application and use of the adaptive management as related to rivers and ESA across the United States.
  • Glen Canyon Restoration – Continued review of historical records and ongoing Colorado River issues to provide guideance for restoration and future management of the Colorado River.
  • Rivers of Japan – Developing integrative approach for the removal of small sabu (sediment retention) dams on the islands of Japan. Utilizing specific GIS and watershed based approaches to assist the Ainu people of Japan, NGO groups and government agencies in the development of specific programs for action.
  • Environmental Evolution in the Western United States – through interviews with leaders, historic river development leaders, and others we are assembling a series of descriptive narratives of the guiding influences on the development of the environmental perspective on western rivers and the species that they support.
